Dr. Robert Kegan and Dr. Lisa Lahey have spent the last 10 years developing and researching an award-winning coaching method based on their breakthrough discovery of a hidden dynamic called the “immunity to change”. This methodology helps people attain deeply sought changes by bringing this internal unconscious resistance to change to light.
Lahey is the author of “Immunity to Change: How to Overcome it and Unlock the Potential in Yourself and Your Organization”, and more recently “An Everyone Culture: Becoming a Deliberately Developmental Organization.”
Lisa is a passionate pianist and hiker; she lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts with her husband and two sons. This is a powerful conversation with many great insights. Enjoy my key take-outs below and please leave your comments.
Key Take Outs
- Find the deep motivation why you want to make change. This is the hidden why and when you don’t have that strong connection to your purpose then you will lack the motivation. When it comes to making change this is essential. Why is it that you really desire this change and what does it mean to you?
- Ask yourself the question, “why do I feel this way” in relation to who you are. Awareness comes through questions of the Self and questions around why things are the way they are. As you search for answers you gain deeper insight and this will guide you in making decisions around who you are and how you want to be.
- Define yourself internally not externally. We grow up by defining ourselves based on external feedback and requirements however life becomes greater when we start defining ourselves internally. Who do you want to be and how do you want to be. It need not matter what you think you need to be or of what others expect of you.
- What is holding you back unconsciously? We all have drive to make change to do greater things yet often find ourselves never making great progress or progress at all. Dig deep! Find the unconscious resistance that exists and work to set that as your goal. When something is progressing or moving there is often a force behind it, what is the work to overcome that.
