Our fears are inbuilt and designed to protect us from self-harm. Fear brings upon us unpleasant emotions when we face danger, pain, or injury. Yet what is the worse thing that could happen when we speak in front of a crowd?
What makes us so nervous that we will avoid public speaking at all costs? Some people would rather die than to have to stand up and speak in front of an observing audience. Strange, right? In this book Dale Carnegie shares the secrets to overcoming this fear and becoming an effective speaker.
I am one of those people. Growing up speaking was one of my greatest fears. If I knew at the start of the schooling year I had to give a presentation half way through I would loose countless hours of sleep until it was over. Yet when its all over and done I wondered, and still do, what all the concern was about.
When faced with the task to present to a crowd we can become overwhelmingly self conscious, worry about being judged, anxious that we will appear nervous, concerned that we will freeze, perhaps we wont be well received or that we will be embarrassed. All concerns that may affect our ego.
These are fair reasons to have this fear. Our brain tells us that we really don’t want to have this flood of undesirable emotions come about therefore we wish to avoid it at all costs.
Why then do so many of us go out of our way to overcome this fear? I myself have an absolute new found passion with public speaking and would consider myself also as perhaps the most unlikely person you would expect to step up on stage and present to a group of eager ears.
The ability to speak effectively not only boosts your confidence but it effects on many areas of communication within your personal and work life are huge. We all in some way a required daily to speak and communicate and therefore by practicing the art of effective speaking we can all benefit.
The power you get from talking or making a presentation to a group and the rush you get thereafter is an amazing feeling. When people listen to us if fills us with such great positive emotions and happy chemicals it is simply like a drug. To captivate an audience fills us with a great sense of significance, a fundamental human need.
It is a privilege for anyone to be able to speak their mind so freely.
Perhaps the most rewarding part of speaking is simply the overcoming of ones fears. With any fear that you hold and that you take serious action towards you will only improve yourself to a higher level. It is outside our comfort zone were serious positive change in our life occurs.
This is reason enough to not only tackle your public speaking fear and will help you tackle other fears in life. When you are no longer infected by these damaging emotions of fear future challenges become easier, more exciting and rewarding.
Dale Carnegie is most famously known for his book titled, ‘How to Win Friends & Influence People’, one of the first best-selling self help books ever published. Certainly a must read for anyone wanting to learn how to better interact with and get along with people.
