Appreciate The Time Others Give
“Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.” Warren Buffett
I am very protective of my time. It sometimes leaves me feeling selfish. The fact is time is the one resource we have that we can never get more of. Being conscious of this I am aware of how I use my time and how I lend my time to others. Maybe I am selfish.
I am also compassionate and grateful for the life I get to live. I conscious of suffering in my life and that of others and by showing appreciation for what I have assists me to dissolve any suffering that may exist.
I do care and appreciate how others give their time for the benefit of others. Actually, I think it’s important to be aware and reflect on the ways in which others sacrifice their time for our personal benefit.
As I was swimming the other day I was watching the girl walking up and down the side of the pool, like a life guard, looking out for the best interest of us swimmers.
She was giving up her time to do something for us. Yes, she is paid but I can only assume it would be a minimum wage and also a job that at least from my perspective, appears to be quite monotonous and boring.
At first, I thought on why it is so important for us all to be aware of how we trade our time. When we give up our time we must really make sure and be aware of the value we gain from doing so.
Time is one thing we can never get more of. What is more valuable than time? Only you can decide on that.
Yet, as I watched this life guard monitor the pool and the swimmers within I found appreciation. She was giving up something so valuable just so I could do something I love.
It is not for me to judge how someone uses their time. That is their choice. But in being grateful for the time they giving, connecting it to how it is benefiting me makes me think more about how I can give my time to benefit others. I may be selfish with my time but I am also considerate.
Whenever we are being served by others, no matter what their state or mood or that of our own, it is important to remember that they are using their most valuable resource to serve us. The more appreciative we can be for one another in this manner the more we can help one another enjoy this life more fully.
