Entrepreneurs on Fire Podcast with John Lee Dumas (JLD)
If you are a podcaster, entrepreneur, business owner or just like to hear about others success with the desire to inspire your own, you’ll get some value from the “value bombs” JLD is dropping in his podcast, EOFire.
What attracted me to this podcast was John’s passion and story. Head over to his website to get his take – Entrepreneurs on Fire, however, for what it’s worth, here’s mine.
John served in the US army for eight years after which like most of us he found himself working a job I believe as a practicing lawyer. Not overly excited about that life he moved again this time into real estate operating in San Diego and explains this is where his “entrepreneurial spirit” was born.
I get a feeling John’s a bit of a disciplined mofo. I would suggest he’s got a lot of self-drive and isn’t the kind of guy that would just accept life as is hence his search for something more, the quest for freedom.
In the search for more ideas and opportunities to make a buck and create his dream life, he began listening to podcasts. And that is when his obsession and the journey to his success took off, at least I assume.
I can relate to his story. As an ex-agent myself this is when I also started to listen to podcasts, initially with a desire to motivate myself and then as an effort to explore my journey in life further. Podcasts begin to consume my life in a very positive way.
For John, he was after more but couldn’t find a podcast that was giving value and inspiration daily for aspiring entrepreneurs like himself. So he created one himself – welcome EOFire, welcome a life of freedom!
I interviewed John on my Podcast – Episode 295, a swift show which you can listen to here, and I asked him what the one thing we are all chasing, his answer – “freedom was.” I couldn’t agree more with this, and for John, he has indeed gone about creating great freedom for himself.
As you know, I am a loving fan of liberty however in reflection on his answer I couldn’t help but wonder if it was deeper than that and after a few more questions the answer arose that I was looking for and that was “happiness.” Whatever freedom means to you it is likely out of the desire to create more happiness.
Back to EOFire and John. He interviews amazing people, and for those of us beginning our entrepreneurial journey, it would be easy to fall into the trap of comparing our success with the likes of John and his guests.
John’s interviewed all the famous icons in the entrepreneurial space including the likes of Tony Robbins, Gary Vaynerchuk, Seth Godin, and Tim Ferriss plus much more. The last I checked he was up to episode 1720. This guy is prolific and has been consistent since day one which I am sure would say is one of the key attributes to creating a successful podcast.
John’s energy, enthusiasm, and passion shine through which will be enough to get you excited yourself unless you’re an Aussie and find it a bit too overwhelming, then you might switch off. He has the typical American signature flare that personally I don’t mind but I know can be a little off putting to those who are not used to it.
However, there is a risk of comparing ourselves outside of our league and this I believe can limit many in creating real authentic success. John’s journey started, like his guests and everyone else that has managed to raise their success, from the starting line and that is where we must all start.
In my opinion, comparing is not a good thing in general however if you wish to emulate what others are doing with efforts in creating your level of success don’t start by assessing what they are doing now but what they’ve done to get there.
John’s got a tonne going on and has recently moved into his dream home but the journey to get there hasn’t been overnight, and I would guess hasn’t been without hard work.
Commit to your journey, be inspired by the success of others but don’t set your expectations aligned with anyone else – set your expectations, set your own goals as it matters to where you are right now, and go after them.
John’s podcast is a daily show with an interview format. Every day he brings on entrepreneurs who are having great success in what they do. John asks a pretty standard set of questions that draw out the guests story with efforts to highlight any key lessons that may benefit others in their journey. Failures included.
For a very long time, I listened to it daily. However, I must admit I’ve recently switched off not that I avoid it altogether it’s just it became a little repetitive. While I love listening to others inspiring stories, I wasn’t getting a tonne of value, and this isn’t to suggest you won’t. The journey for each of us is different and what brings you value will differ from me.
I have noticed that John has amped up his efforts to get solid practical takeaways for his audience and I like that. He is attuned to his “avatar”, and what his listeners are after and I think that continues to bring him his success.
Again, if you are an entrepreneur or business person looking for ideas, tips, and advice to help improve your business success, this is a perfect place to tune in.
