Under The Skin with Russell Brand
Russell Brand is a famous comedian and actor but has another side that keeps me curious and intrigued. His book revolution put Brand on the map as a somewhat political activist.
In this book, he captivated me with his insightful perspectives and a desire to inspire more peace in the world. If you listen to the audiobook, which Russell himself narrates, you’ll appreciate the humour and joy he brings to exciting and sometimes very sombre topics current to the state of the modern age.
Now, there is Under the Skin – a podcast by Russell. As noted in the iTunes summary Under The Skin delves beneath the surface of people we admire, of the ideas that define our time, and history, to display, inspire and shift restricting perspectives.
There is a vast array of guests he brings on from psychological professors, artists, activists, spiritual gurus and other experts or thought leaders.
I enjoy listening to Russell speak, not only for the humour he brings to the discussion but the curious nature and ability to talk openly and be vulnerable. If all his guests and topics were of interest, I would probably listen to every episode. However, I am selective.
Recently he had Sam Harris – the host of The Waking Up Podcast, author, philosopher and neuroscientist, among other things, on the show. For those of you familiar with Sam’s work you would appreciate his professional and academic style.
Now, mix it with Russell Brand, and it opens for a fascinating discussion that pulls and challenges perspectives. He perhaps doesn’t have all the knowledge that Sam does. However, I’d argue that with his inquisitive nature he certainly challenges Sam view and opinions.
There is “truth” and then there is “truth.” That might not make a great deal of sense. However, science and research are only as truthful as the majority of a population would see it as so. If there are enough credible evidence and minimal counter-evidence it is difficult to argue against such claims.
What I think Brand does well is to bring compassion, spirituality and love as counter-evidence of many of the modern day political and scientific truths.
As a recovering addict, Russel speaks on many topics of addition. He newest book, which I have yet to read myself, is titled Recovery: Freedom From Our Addictions. Having listened to Russel speak on the topic of addiction numerous times I believe it was his “spiritual awakening” that has led him out of his self-induced suffering caused by addiction.
Again, what I appreciate about Russel is that even though he’s a recovered addict himself he doesn’t deny the pleasures and fun that can be had in such states nor does he judge others. Instead, he opens up to inspire others to seek change if they desire to by compassionately sharing new perspectives from the other side of the fence.
Because he is a very spiritual brother he’s guests are often of a similar nature. They do all come with differing values, beliefs backgrounds and strengths. The common denominator I would suggest is their alignment with some form of spiritual belief.
Topics range from that of consciousness, psychology and other facets of the human condition. In one episode, Russell may be discussing ego, and then in the next, he might be conversing about the many benefits of psychedelics as medication for treating addiction.
Many of his talks focus on political issues such as Marxism, the current American political landscape, feminism, equality, history, revolutions and the paths forward. Again there is such an array of subjects to tantalise the taste buds, and when delivered by Russell, I am sure you’ll find something to enjoy.
In summary, Russel may not be for everyone, but I get a great deal of value tuning in to his podcast – Under the Skin. I would suggest that if you are interested in learning more about human nature and how that intertwines with the socio-economic and political landscapes you’ll have fun with this podcast. And on reflection perhaps begin to wonder and inquire as to what it all means for the future of the human race. Delivered in an entertaining and inquisitive fashion, Russel will not disappoint.
