I have talked about procrastination before and why we need to embrace this action of self-defeat. At the end of the day, the things we procrastinate over are usually the things we most desire or must do in efforts to reach our goals.
If we don’t overcome procrastination, we may feel as though we haven’t achieved. We may also feel some level of regret. To assist us to overcome procrastination and avoid regret Brian uses the metaphor that suggests the first thing we should do each morning is to eat the biggest and ugliest frog. The ‘frog’ is the activity, task or project that will bring us closer to the completion of our goals and that which we desire most in life. In doing so we will be left with a greater feeling of satisfaction and that will motivate us to continue to eat more frogs throughout the day.
When we accomplish anything, we receive a natural high and this is what increases our ability to get other things done. The feeling of completing big tasks releases endorphins this will increase our clarity and give us a sense of purpose. This will promote confidence and competence needed to tackle future challenges and tasks. Our ability to then get more done becomes effortless and highly rewarding.
For most of us every day we have an almost endless list of things we want or need to get done. Prioritising our list in this manner help us achieve more in less time. Of course, it’s easier said than done. This is why Brian shares many ideas to give us the tools in greater effectiveness all the while explaining why and how.
From applying the 80/20 rule to leveraging your special skills, each simple step identifies ways to help us get closer to better time management and overcoming that dreaded procrastination. It’s important in our day that we don’t just be busy for the sake of being busy. This is usually a sign that we are avoiding more important ‘frogs’ or critical tasks. Personally, I have had many experiences of finding an excuse or reason to not do what I know I should be doing. This book helped me reverse how I used to tackle my day and I am much better for it.

This will raise our productivity, performance and overall satisfaction each day. And by getting more done in less time we will allow more time in life to enjoy those other things in life that we may sometimes neglect or wish to do.
