The War of Art by Steven Pressfield
Written and narrated by Leigh Martinuzzi (First published 28.07.2014)
“To labor in the arts for any reason other than love is prostitution.” Steven Pressfield.
Are you a writer, painter, musician, politician, a person with some deep inner desire to travel a path that you currently are not? Have you ever started something and caved? Have you been meaning to start a creative project but just haven’t quite got to it yet? If that sounds like you then this book just may be for you.
Steven Pressfield is the author of The War of Art. He has written many books however this best-seller has to be one of his most popular pieces of work. In it, Steven suggests that resistance is a toxic force that acts as the strongest barrier to us succeeding in what it is our heart desires. We all face it and most probably every day.
I found it to be an easy and inspirational read. Regardless of your art when you dig deep Steven shares so much insight that helps bring clarity and direction to help us become the muse within.
If we look at resistance in our everyday life we know it to be our greatest barrier in taking action yet it is the one thing we must face in order to grow and succeed in the areas we so desire.
If you look at weight training, when lifting weights our muscles face resistance and it is by fighting against this resistance that builds our muscles. The same applies to all that we do, all that we procrastinate against. By fighting the resistance to act we can overcome resistance until it no longer becomes a barrier.
Roadblocks of resistance will never cease but as we learn the skill to overcome this powerful force we can learn to better manage it. We can create greater disciplines to help overcome future obstacles and one day become masters at fighting resistance so we can continue to passionately pursue our work and art.
Pressfield shares his guide to breaking down and overcoming resistance with inspiration to get to work on your art. If you’re already underway but facing hurdles, this book will push you to further it. He will show you how to effectively reach greater heights. It is a must read for all those out there struggling in the daily grind and yet wishing they could just pursue their creative endeavours. This is the war of art.
