A Thought on Happiness: Found Internally Not Externally

As I grow and experience this life I gain more happiness. This may not have been the case if I didn’t take my own initiative to make significant change in my life. It is my belief that for many of us as we depart our parents bracing arms and the support of schooling life into a world of independence and adulthood, and as we do we become less happy as time passes.

I have never been happier and while I could list out a number of defining factors and reasons for this the one that infiltrates my thoughts today is that I have become more inwardly focused. This is not from a level of selfishness, quite the contrary actually. I feel as though I have become even more selfless in the focus inwardly on my own happiness.

The truth is that externally happiness is not found nor can it ever be found. No person, thing or situation can bring you to higher levels of happiness in life. By placing extrinsically the need of happiness in your life you will constantly find yourself disappointed when reality does not exceed, nor meet, your expectations. We have become so demanding on someone or something to give us this happiness sensation that we no longer realise how to truly create long lasting and sustainable happiness. I don’t think I ever knew, just figuring it out.

Happiness is found internally! For it is what is within that you have full control and therefore happiness is your absolute responsibility.

A another persons may help raise your levels of happiness for a period and when they no longer fill that cup your happiness levels lower again. Wedding days are magical days for couples yet divorce seems to be on the rise.

A material position and the thought of owning something will elate your sense of happiness for a period but this too will wear off. Nothing I have ever owned has ever given me endless and abundant levels of happiness. If it were true than why do we find ourselves constantly craving more. Like a drug, stuff gives us momentary raised levels of happiness until it wears off and we need that next fix. Truth be told, things that we own often end up owning us causing lower levels of happiness in life.

As for events or the situations we find ourselves in they too are not forever lasting. Everything moves on, forward and the universe is in constant change. Holding on to happy moments that have since passed is a great way to miss out on the moments that exist now. And being present in each moment has proven benefits to one’s happiness than almost anything else. Living to heavily in the past of future is great for our presence and levels of happiness.

If you desire happiness than it is up to you to create that and this is not created from looking externally. Look within and ask yourself the question, “what would truly make me happy?” Followed on by this question, “why?” In honest and deep reflection you may just discover some very powerful answers.

Understand this, happiness comes in many forms but true lasting happiness comes from living with freedom and fulfilment. Living with absolute freedom, means to be in full control of your life and how its lived. And being fulfilled with what you do and how you live your life means doing what you love and being able to contribute to others.

You cannot control what is external, you can not demand happiness or force more of it into your life but you can create it. It is a progression, not an instant win, and it comes only from within. Find happiness their first and then you will better influence happiness externally. We are the creators of our reality so if your reality, your life is not full of happiness, than start working within. Begin the transformation.
