  • How Do You Define Happiness?

    How Do You Define Happiness?

I have a curiosity and passion in trying to figure out what life is really about. As I continue to ask the big questions and research this field of work I am still not sure if there is indeed any meaning in life. I know that I am experiencing something based on how it feels but beyond that, I cannot be certain.

As I desire to live this life and truthfully as I can to make the most of the time I have I continue to do the work. On The Hidden Why Podcast, I have had interviews with many inspiring and amazing guests. I learn something new from each one of them. I discover a little more and with each new discovery, I uncover a little more truth about life.

For whatever this experience is I believe we are not here to endure suffering. I wish to remove myself from unnecessary suffering as best I can. What suffering is necessary? Maybe suffering that comes through giving birth or the suffering that results from the pain of an injury is necessary. The self-created suffering caused by existing with no greater meaning is not a necessary reason to suffer. (more…)

  • Bringing Back Balance to Life from A Deeper Perspective of the Universe

Bringing Back Balance to Life from A Deeper Perspective of the Universe

The universe is a system that is essentially a play of energies in balance. As are our lives, constantly seeking to bring balance. I am not a scientist but I understand this experience and therefore wish to reflect on it as I attempt to inspire you to bring back balance into your life.

Here is a question that I had to ask myself, “if indeed the universe is in constant balance than why is there also this constant state of expansion and how can the two coexist?” I may not have the correct answer but with my limited knowledge here is my explanation. Time and space are infinite whereas the energies that bring balance are not.

There are two groups of energies, one that is intended for universal expansion while the other is intended for cohesion. Together therefore they bring balance. If these energies were infinite this would disallow the universe to exist in such dynamic equilibrium. As time and space are infinite things continue to expand. (more…)

  • Thoughts on Death - A Pleasing Approach

Thoughts on Death- A Pleasing Approach

It is not in the fear of death that troubles us the most. You see in death itself pain is little and only short lived. It is the thought of dying and in that process which truly pains us, however maybe it should not.

Consider the point at which you leave your body. Seneca states the pain experienced as your soul departs your body is minute because at this point it is merely sitting on the lips in preparation to depart. As easy as a feather is blown away in a strong gust of wind.

The suffering one may experience leading up to this point, death, is in some cases worse than others. It is human nature to fear pain as we would much rather experience pleasure. The fear associated with this pain may also fear us as we think or move towards death – it is not death alone.  (more…)

  • What Do You Desire? Really Knowing Your True Desires Will Allow Greater Purpose

    What Do You Desire?

When you connect with your deeper why you will grow trust in knowing that what you are doing is right. I know what I am doing is, at least for now.

When you know your why and are more clearly able to see your desires for what they are. Fraud or real. True or false? I know what I desire and compared to what I desired before I knew my why, it is not so great at all.

I desire the freedom to do the work I love. I desire the ability to be paid fairly for the work I do. I desire the ability to provide for my family. That is what I truly desire. What about you?

I need not luxuries although from time to time they feel nice. I need not fam however if my work creates that I am happy to accept it. I need no recognition because I already have the greatest recognition one could hope for and that is from the work I produce. This recognition is gives me unlimited satisfaction and fulfilment in life.

I love life yet sometimes find that following my own path, living my own journey, feels too risky. Sometimes it is. Is there any more certainty in life following a path which is not our own?
What is the worse that could happen from pursuing our legend? Maybe death yet death is inevitable at some point in time. This does not mean I desire death nor do I desire activities that will bring on death. It means that the time I have now I desire to use by doing the work I love.

The greatest fear I have in following my own path is not being able to provide for my family. Now or in my absence. Yet no matter what work I do there is no certainty that exists that could help remove this fear.

I choose to do the work that makes me happy. I choose to do the work.

  • I Feel So Good and Life Is About How You Feel

I Feel So Good and Life Is About How You Feel

I feel so good today. It’s a shame not to feel this way everyday. Still allowing things to slow my week down. I am aware.

I want to feel good but its hard to break the curse of the past. It feels hard to let go. It feels hard to make change. It feels hard to keep up the fight. This wont stop me because I know how it feels on the other side and that is what I want more of.

The more I touch it, feel it, smell it and taste it the more I crave it. It’s like taking drugs yet with better consequences and greater reward.

The more I push towards it, the more I awake and the more I welcome it into my life. And that is progress.

It is not how many times you fall that matters, what matters is how many times you get back up. Always make it one more and you win. The more you get back up the better you become. The quicker you get at getting back up the better you become.

The more resilient you become to the knocks in life the sooner you stand back up to once again take another step forward in the direction that will ultimately make you feel good.

Life’s an experience for that I know. How I choose to be in this experience is my choice. Resources or not. This body is my gift. This mind is mine to control. This life is mine to live as fully and as truly as I desire.

  • If You Are Aware Are You Ready? A Thought or Signal To Take Action.

Awareness comes from being conscious of something. It is an ability to feel, be, or to know and perceive certain objects. In consciousness we can make better decisions to act then if we were not.

Therefore if you are aware are you ready? In this state and with this level of awareness  you have all that you need to act. If you are conscious about change that you are wishing to make, conscious about certain desires and aspirations then you are ready.

For many of us awareness is not an indication of readiness. We have reasons for this. Too often we use these reasons to procrastinate or as an excuse to start making the progress towards that desired state of being.

We may be aware but we have fear. We are aware but we have self-doubt. We are aware but don’t have everything we need. We need more time, money, love, confidence or good looks. We are aware but something is holding us back.  (more…)

  • Disconnect to Reconnect and Find Greater Life Purpose, Clarity, Vision & Improved Relationships

Disconnect to Reconnect and Find Greater Life Purpose, Clarity, Vision & Improved Relationships

This has come up in various conversations and it is the idea that to really live a truer life, one that is our own, we first need to disconnect. The thought is twofold.

We are all so bound to our computers and seem to spend a large amount of time online. Studies suggesting that up to and beyond 40 hours a week are being spent online. It is easy to understand why as there are many cool things happening in this space.

Here inlays the problem. By spending too much time online rather than being the consumer of content we become ourselves consumed. Addicted! Now, addiction isn’t a disease nor should we treat it as one, it is a natural phenomenon of the human race. When we enjoy something we want more. The problem in my view is not being consumed in itself but how being consumed affects other aspects of our lives.

If you are a business person or entrepreneur the risk of being consumed online is that you never gain traction and progression with your business which may actually be the original reason why you went there in the first place. The internet is swarming with a million and one ways to smash it online, from marketing to networking but the truth for most of us is that we get trapped in the web of what to do and what really works. We end up spending a lot of time moving in circles and getting no further ahead.

This is why we need to disconnect. Switch off the internet, remove yourself from the chair in your office and get amongst life. Branch out to networking events and speak live with people. Start your own group and create a tribe that meets up to share and inspire one another. Get into nature, create some space and ask the bigger questions of life. Spend majority of your time offline and only go online when it makes business sense.

Finally, to discover your why and to start walking your own path in life, a more meaningful life, you need to disconnect to reconnect. When you disconnect from your current reality you create space for you to connect within. This allows you to start listening to your heart. It allows you to gain some clarity, clear some space so that when you return you are refreshed and energised.

Disconnecting happens too rarely. Going on holiday once a year is not enough. When we are forced to make change to a sudden change in circumstance. Often these are not the most ideal opportunities for the kind of disconnection we need. We need to do it daily. We need to switch off. We need to have weekly mini-vacations where we escape into nature, connecting with people and our tribes. This kind of disconnection is healthy. This kind of disconnection makes our lives that much more powerful when we reconnect.

    When will you next disconnect?

  • 5 Ideas On Why Quitting A Paying Job In Favour Of The Life You Love Isn't Such A Bad Idea

5 Ideas On Why Quitting A Paying Job In Favour Of The Life You Love Isn’t Such A Bad Idea

This is a question that many of us contemplate at some point along our journey. The statistics indicate that 83% of us are unhappy or dissatisfied with our current jobs. I would draw the conclusion that if this is the case then the satisfaction with your life would also be lessened. Why? Because for most of us work takes up about a third of our time and for most of us what inflicts pain or displeasure on one aspect of life usually blinds us in other aspects of our life. I conclude that if we are truly unhappy then many of us do contemplate the thought of quitting our day job to pursue greater passions. And why the heck not?

There are a few reasons why we stop asking this question and resist taking action on the idea of quitting our job. Here are some thoughts and while it’s not all inclusive for many of you I am sure you can relate.

    • Fear. There is much fear around these ideas and it will really depend on your individual situation in life and how heavily this job has played in the role of defining your Self. The ego is a master of keeping our Self-definition alive and the risk of attack on this brings on fear. Fear is truly a survival mechanism but nowadays it seems to trap or limit us. The thought to change our job will do this.

It is like someone questioning who we are. It is a hard to answer such a question and part the reason why the ego doesn’t like it because if it struggles to define itself than what or who does it become. We challenge our ego’s existence. We challenge who we are. Who we are is simply a creation and we have therefore the ability to recreate this if we truly desire to put ourselves into another story.

Much of the fear that comes about arises from our ego. Will you be judged by family or friends, how will you continue your house payments, what about all the years of work you’ve put in. The list of fears spreads wide and deep. These are stories about who we think we are and think we need to continue to be.

Try to see beyond this because once the change has been made your ego will find new definition and attach itself to new meaning. And while the feeling attached to the fear that may come about is real enough the why behind the fear is usually a lie. Fear is based on nothing real or tangible and therefore is as real as the vision of our future self that we desire to create and the only way to get there is to move through your fears.

I believe fear should be a signal for us to take action and if no action is taken fear will linger or our dreams will vanish.

    • Uncertainty. Humans love uncertainty in life but we also crave certainty. The idea of quitting a well-paid job to pursue our passion and other interests is scary because it disrupts our certainty. How will you keep the level of lifestyle you’ve become so adjusted to? How will you support the family, keep up the car payments or afford to go on that next holiday? All valid and very logical reasons to hold onto that dissatisfying job, right?

When we become stagnant and too certain about life however how then do we seek to fulfil that uncertainty piece in life we lust for? We delve into activities that take us out of the realm we live in. We tune into episodes of The Walking Dead because the idea of something so unreal excites us. We take drugs and get drunk to shake things up a little. We become addicted to reliance on outside stimulation to manipulate our stagnated lives in an attempt to make ourselves believe we are actually enjoying life, but we are not.

Quitting your job may actually be the healthier option to keep alive the adventure and uncertainty of life. And to be honest isn’t life about how you want to feel? And how do you want to feel, happy? Yes, there is lack of certainty that will abound you when you leave your job but what certainty do you have that by staying where you are will bring you greater levels of happiness as time passes?

I have greater certainty in following the path that I set out for myself than following the path someone has laid for me. The uncertainty of my own path is also much more rewarding in pursuit than the alternative. When it comes to uncertainty in making a career change be confident in knowing that perhaps there is actually greater certainty.

    • Responsibility. Oh the responsibility of our lives. Since when did we have to be so freaking grown-up anyway? Who thought this would be an enjoyable way to live life? Fuck that! Life is to be enjoyed and if we take things so seriously I am sure that will lesson this experience. Now that is a very irresponsible statement!

Most of the responsibilities that we have, we have put here ourselves. We create conditions in our lives that we then become prisoner to. They are duties that we are to be in control of. There is a difference in letting them control us and us controlling them. Don’t allow your responsibilities to control you. Don’t let them lock you into a life of distaste. Yes, you are responsible and because you are responsible shouldn’t you take control of how greatly they control you?

I believe that we are responsible to quit unconducive conditions of our life. Because the more we dislike life or what we do the greater it affects other aspects of our life. The greater this affect has on how we show-up and how we behave has impact on the rest of the world. The greater the numbers of unhappy souls walking around today the greater the unhappiness that exists. On the contrary, the more people that love life the greater amount of love there will be in life.

Don’t let your responsibilities control your action towards making healthy positive change in life, take control, it will make a world of difference.

    • Guilt. There is a feeling of guilt that exists when we we do things for ourselves. I am not too sure why this exists but it does. Perhaps it is because when we feel good yet still see other people suffering or in pain we feel selfish or wrong in our state of being. We need not feel guilty about feeling great nor should we feel guilty about trying to do things in attempt to raise our state of being.

The greater we feel that better we will be able to help others, think about that. If you are loving life, loving your job then how much more energy can you put into more conducive acts of kindness. Your ego will make you feel guilty, your boss, friends and peers will make you feel guilty, life will make you feel guilty but that is just because deep within them they admire your courage to do something more for you and what to do the same in their own lives.

If your actions do not affect anyone else than do not feel guilt. When someone else attempts to make you feel guilty is it down out of their own selfish reasons, and should they feel guilt for this? We don’t need to place guilt on one another for pursuing greater happiness because ultimately it will benefit us all.

    • Uncomfortable. Change is never easy, it’s uncomfortable. However, when you are making change for the right reasons it’s exciting. Here’s the thing to consider. When someone else forces change on us we don’t like it because we have to adjust and adapt. Like when you are in the middle of a great movie and right at the climax someone rings the door bell, it takes us out of our comfort zone and this can change that state of how we feel. Not cool! But if we our self are to pause the movie to get an ice-cream if feels ok, this disruption is acceptable.

In change we find strength. It is actually a good thing to bring about change from time to time. For example, you could do a fast to improve your resilience in future times of change. In change we find uncertainty and that is also something we seek. What is more magical is when you bring the change on yourself. Quitting a job, when bought on by oneself is change like no other. It will excite you, push you closer towards your full potential and bring you more aligned with a true path in life than anything else.

Embrace being uncomfortable. The more comfortable we are the more we should encourage change.

Telling someone to quit their job is not easy advice to give however I would like to suggest that if you are truly not loving your job then do quit, please! Life is about how you feel and not one of us wants to feel shit or insignificant. Life is to be enjoyed and ultimately life is to be happy. Happiness cannot be found in dissatisfaction.

To be satisfied we must meet our expectations. What are your expectations of life? Mine are freedom, fulfilment and ultimately happiness. I am sure most of us have this expectation to be happy in life. Satisfaction is to “make” satisfied or to make our expectations be meet. If your job is not conducive to this and is not making greater satisfaction in your life, hence the negative prefix of “dis” to satisfaction, then perhaps this is reason enough to make change. Life is too short for wasting time in a dissatisfloseying state of being.

At this point I hope there is enough inspiration and thought to assist you in making the ultimate decision of life. To quit or not to quit. At the end of the day what have you got to lose. You might think there is a great deal to lose but in truth there is not. Unless it means loss of life what else is there? Actually in changes like this I would argue that there is more to gain. More on this topic to follow.

  • What is a Hidden Why and Do We All Have One?

What is a Hidden Why and Do We All Have One?

I get asked this question often and as often as I get asked it, I ask others. “What is my hidden why or indeed what is a hidden why?” Do we all have a why and if we do what does it mean and how do I find it?

Valid questions considering the title of my website and podcast, and because I claim to help and assist people find their hidden why. It is not like looking for your lost car keys, to find your hidden why is not as simple as looking in the last place you left it. It is not like finding a lost dog although if you put out posters on some local community boards, others, like myself, might help guide you to find it.

While your hidden why is not a tangible item that can be found, when you do find it, like the keys to your car, it can take you to places you wish to go. It’s liberating! Not like releying on public transportation of the conformed path society has set out, being the driver of your life can have much greater rewards.

Finding your hidden why is not immediate, although for some it may appear this way, it takes time to reveal it. It for that reason that you need to place many posters on walls seeking guidance and to keep digging to help you discover it. You need to ask more questions both externally and within. You need to become more aware, reflect more deeply and experience more widely. You need to travel back into memories of the past and jump of the track and start cutting new paths forward that are your own.

When a dog has a purpose, to find that bone it buried weeks ago, it traces itself back to locations once travelled. Memories of our past are usually a good place to start in search for our hidden why. Things that use to fire us up, get us excited or make us happy may be signs of our greater essence. Once a dog picks up on a scent of a buried bone it begins to dig. It digs here, it digs there, it digs holes deep and wide. The stronger the scent becomes the more obsessed we become.

Our domesticated lives tend to cover our soul and in doing so don’t allow our true why to emerge or unfold. This is why I refer to it as “hidden” because it is there we just have to uncover the blockages of our soul to allow it to once again be expressed and in expressing our essence may our greater why arise.

Our why is a greater sense of purpose and greater reason for existence. This varies from one human to the next. An apple tree has the purpose of baring fruit, in particular apples. A human I believe has the purpose of being in a state of peace and happiness yet how we go about achieving that state of existence is complex and wide.

You may have the purpose to put on a jacket to keep you from getting cold. That is a purposeful action that has useful benefit. What then is the purposeful action that will allow you to live with greater happiness? These will be determined in the behaviours you adopt influenced most likely by the thoughts you have and how your feel moment to moment.

When we are mindful and the mind is connected with our soul we are more aware. Just like our senses tell us when it is cold or hot to remind us of what actions we should take so can the mind when connected with our soul to better direct us more truly in life.

There is a great quote that says, “existence comes before essence.” I like that and believe this to be true. Our soul doesn’t exist without a mind and the mind doesn’t exist without a body. Although some argue that our soul will carry on in spirit after our existence, while that’s a nice thought, how can this be true? Because without a body and mind to allow a soul to exist how could we then be aware of any soul that may exist or not? The thoughts go deep on the subject of why.

I like to think that we are all born with our own unique soul. This soul is carried in the egg and when fertilised energy is release to form our existence. The growth of our body comes about. This bring about heart, the truest connection with our soul, and then our mind that helps connect the body to the soul. If our soul is covered in gunk that has come about by a disregard of listening to it and using the heart, then our mind will just direct us based on the external reality that our body is exposed.

On this level the path that we proceed will not truly be our own and therefore our why will not emerge. If we do the work to clear the blockages and start connecting and listening once again to our heart and soul may we then discover our greater purpose.

Do we have a why? Yes, I believe we do. Is it innately within us? For this I am not sure. Your essence and purpose will evolve as you experience more of this life. While it may be purposeful to put on a jacket now it might be necessary to remove it along the way. Whatever it is you do you will know if it is true to you by the way it makes you feel. I can only suggest that when you start to walk the path that aligns more deeply with your soul that your will notice it by a heightened and more inner level of happiness. May you discover yours.

  • The World Doesn’t Revolve Around Me? by Anna Sheinman

The World Doesn’t Revolve Around Me? by Anna Sheinman

I had so many plans for 2015. I was going to ski in Vail, adopt another dog and get into the best shape of my life. However, 2015 had different plans for me. In fact, the universe forgot to revolve around my plans altogether.

C’est la vie – That’s life and it falls apart at times

I had a nasty skiing accident in February 2015. As a result, my knee got busted and a blood clot invaded one of my veins. At the same time, my dad got really ill and died in 2015. Consequently, I couldn’t fly to attend my father’s funeral.

Under those circumstances, I was grief-stricken. Not to mention that I wasn’t able to walk or to make myself a cup of coffee.  For my strong and independent psyche, this was an equivalent of slow death.

Even though, I was very fortunate to have my best friend – my husband by my side,  I needed to find my own strength.  I was sad and cried. I found comfort in a thought that my dad is no longer suffering.  Luckily, my dad and I had a chance to reconcile our differences and spent some time together before he passed away.

Likewise, not much was to be done with my knee for either. So I settled into a nice comfy chair with a good book and let the time pass.  Hence, I found comfort in food, books and writing.

Surely, time passes and heals. It’s been a few years since these devastating events. My knee is practically as good a new. And I went to visit my dad’s grave to put a closer to his passing.

After all, 2015 taught me many great lessons. In this blog, I would like to share my top five tools which helped me to bounce back.

    1) Start a Journal

Journaling is an ancient tradition that dates back to at least 10th century Japan. Successful people throughout history kept journals.  Oscar Wilde, 19th century playwright, said:

“I never travel without my diary.  One should always have something sensational to read on the train.”

University of Texas at Austin psychologist and researcher James Pennebaker said that regular journaling strengthens immune cells. He believes that writing about stressful events helps you come to terms with them.

In fact, writing is my number one tool.  I keep track of my feelings, food intake, exercise regimen, dreams, fears, gratitude and priorities. My daily journal is my best friend and my shrink.  Ultimately, writing helps me to keep track of all aspects of my life. It makes it easier to let go of distractions and prioritize important work. I keep all my notes in the excel spreadsheet. Generally, I spend about 10 minutes in the morning and about 15 minutes in the evening to go over my day.  In addition, I write down my yearly and monthly agendas.

First thing to remember, make it simple and consistent. Forget about spelling and punctuation. Privacy is key if you are to write without censors. Write quickly, as this frees your brain from “should” and other blocks to successful journaling.  Start with a pen and paper or use my template.

What are you waiting for? Grab a pen and start writing!

    2) Get more Sleep

Most of us are sleep deprived. As a result, this deprivation will lead to obesity and depression. Start prepping for sleep as soon as you can. It can be 30 minutes to two hours. In fact, Brian Johnson talks a lot about a digital sunset. Basically, you completely shut-down your electronic input and gently remove all electronics from your bedroom some time before you go to sleep.

With this in mind, I typically spend some time with my husband. Follow with my nightly journal log reflecting on the day and the next day to come.  Finally, I put my phone on airplane mode and turn all my devices down.

What can you give up to gain more hours of sleep?

    3) Eat Clean

Based on numerous studies the plant-based diet is the optimal for health and well-being. However, it is very easy to overeat even with healthy foods. I gained over 10 lbs in less then a year simply by not paying attention. Overeating leads to obesity and causes inflation and arthritis.

As doctor Chris Centeno  noted that obesity is linked to knee arthritis. In summary, when you eat more your body’s ability to turn off the hunger switch is disabled and you produced hormone called leptin. You hunger switch is overwritten and your brain can’t differentiate from “hunger” to “full” signal and you tend to eat more and more contributing to this vicious cycle.  In fact, based on a number of studies, there is a direct correlation between leptin levels in the blood and arthritis. And this was independent of how much someone weighed. In addition, hormones that are the causes of obesity seem to act negatively on cartilage health. The good news is that  you reduce your leptin levels and therefore the potential of leptin knee arthritis by short-term fasting (24-72 hours).

Provided my state of mind, it took me some time to come back to balanced eating. In fact, the Rich’s Roll podcast interview with Ray Cronise and regenexx research changed the way I eat.  As a result, I was able to loose 10 lbs and keep it off.

So, take small steps on daily basis. You can cook your own meals instead of going out. Fill your plate with veggies and fruit. Get rid of the sugars, processed foods and reduce your portion sizes. In addition, remember that every time you over stuff that belly, you also hurting your cartilage!

What can you do today to improve your diet?

    4) Get Moving

We all know the benefits of exercise. I have a somewhat rigid routine  which includes a lot of knee rehabilitation exercises, high intensity workout, finishing up with light yoga.  In fact, inability to move was very challenging, but I kept focusing on what I can do. A few weeks after the injury, I was able to do some core and arm work and over the course over the next weeks increase the intensity. Start slow, commit to moving on daily basis, no time for the gym – work out at home. There is so much to try: 12 – minute beginner boot-camp, Pilates at home, Yoga, go for a walk, take stairs, keep moving. To avoid injuries start small and build up. At no time you should be in pain.

Need motivation? Exercise turns back the genetic clock, keeps you younger  and make you smarter!

How can you incorporate more movement into your life?

    5) Practice Meditation

There are no excesses, meditation needs to happen on daily basis.
As Jonathan Haidt noted in his book “The Happiness Hypothesis: Finding Modern Truth in Ancient Wisdom“:

“Suppose you read about a pill you could take once a day to reduce anxiety and increase your contentment. Would you take it?” Haidt inquires. “Suppose further that the pill had a great variety of side effects, all of them good: increased self-esteem, empathy and trust; it even improves memory. Suppose, finally, that the pill is all-natural and costs nothing. Now would you take it? The pill exists. It is called meditation.”

There are so many options to choose from, try different techniques and remember you can’t fail at meditation. From my understanding mediation is not about turning your thoughts off, but rather becoming a non-judgmental observer. Do your research, if you find a technique that resonates with you, give it at least 21 days before you move on to something else.

My meditation practice is about 10 minutes a day.  I start with some muscle release and basic movement coordinated with breath. The actual meditation is simply focused breathing. Sometime I visual a mountain and use mantras. Basically, the key is to keep it simple and consistent.

    No more excuses, just meditate!

    6) Find Joy

I love hiking and being outdoors, exploring the woods, climbing the mountains. My whole world was crumbled when I couldn’t walk, but I also love to read. During my debilitating injury I’ve discovered audio-books. My grief dissipated as Douglass Adams told me about life, universe and everything else…I a big science-fiction fan. What makes your heart smile? Whether it is walking in the park, dancing or reading a good book. Allocate some time in your schedule for this activity.

To conclude, life can really kick you in the knee sometimes.
