Life like a holiday. I can hear the questions and doubt already. “Yeah right! How?” “It’s a nice idea but some of us have to work.” “Easy said than done.” For whatever the excuse, reason or doubt I would suggest it is exactly for those reasons that we must seek to approach life more like a holiday.
The hunter-gatherers travelled regularly, moving from one place to the next. This allowed them to continually change their environments and routines. I think this helped keep life interesting. The agricultural age forced us to remain put. Not great for the soul, sanity or our level of our happiness. (more…)

“Is it kind, is it necessary, is it true, and does it improve the silence?”
A brilliant conversation I had with Gayle Hardie, founder of the Global Leadership Foundation and expert in transformational health. In this conversation we discuss all things on leadership, change, emotional health, why environment is paramount, practices including meditation, competition vs. abundance, why choice is a gift and how we must all take responsibility for the leadership of our own lives through the choices we make.

Make Peace with Your Mind: How Mindfulness and Compassion Can Free You from Your Inner Critic by Mark Coleman
“With mindfulness, we can be with the experience in more immediate way. When we find ourselves flooded with an emotion that’s come after the judgement, we’ve often missed the very judgment that triggered the emotion.” Mark Coleman
More mindfulness anyone? It plagues books these days and for that I am a big fan. I don’t think we can get enough. Either we control the mind or it controls us. The one place we have full control yet I wonder how well do we exercise that control. The mind becomes what it sees and believes. The mind sets our reality. An unobserved mind that runs wild and free may be less conducive to creating the reality we truly desire.

“It is impossible to have a great life unless it is a meaningful life. And it is very difficult to have a meaningful life without meaningful work.” Jim Collins
Here is a formula for meaningful work – Complexity + Effort + Reward = Meaningful work.
If you have trouble finding meaning in your work perhaps it is missing one of these elements. If you lack meaning all I can suggest and would encourage is to find meaningful work – what is the purpose without it. Enjoy this quick thought!

“Before you can control conditions, you must first control yourself. Self mastery is the hardest job you’ll ever tackle. If you do not conquer self, you will be conquered by self. You may see at one at the time both your best friend and greatest enemy by stepping in front of a mirror.” Napoleon Hill
In this episode I share with you my thoughts on self-control and how we can influence the lacking of free will in our lives so that we can become our greatest leaders and direct our ship towards the destination we desire to go.

Waking Up: A Guide to Spirituality Without Religion by Sam Harris
“The fact that one can lose one’s sense of self in an ocean of tranquility does not mean that one’s consciousness is immaterial or that it presided over the birth of the universe.” Sam Harris
Another fascinating and insightful read of the year. Sam Harris is the author of five New York Times best sellers including this one and writes on the topics of neuroscience, religion, meditation, politics and philosophy. He also has a kick-ass podcast that was introduced to me by a friend that has become a bit of a favourite.

Sam Harris is deep and very knowledgeable. If I am honest much of what he talks about is over and beyond my simplistic mind but when I do manage to handle his language and thoughts I am inspired beyond which words can’t describe – speechless!
“We must all suffer one of two things: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret or disappointment.” Jim Rohn
Self-control and discipline. In many ways I am a master and in many ways I am not. What I know is that discipline and to more extent self-control is what I really desire to continually improve. In this quick episode on The Hidden Why podcast I share my thoughts.
If we are to lead our lives to that which we desire than we have to master leadership as we are the captain of our ship. While it is said that in truth there is no free will I still believe that to some extent we can steer the ship in the direction we wish to travel. Discipline is a key leadership trait and something to be mastered. Enjoy!
