The School of Greatness: A Real-World Guide to Living Bigger, Loving Deeper and Leaving a Legacy by Lewis Howes

“Vision without action is a dream. Action without a vision is a nightmare.” Lewis Howes

Lewis Howes is the host The School of Greatness Podcast. He launched this podcast with attempt to gain from highly successful people what it means to live with success. I have a feeling that his ultimate goal is to live and lead his own legacy – and that he is certainly now doing. A goal worthy for all of us.

Lewis has a great story to share from his own life experiences and for much of which he exposes in this book. Lewis was a professional football player who was struck by a serious injury that put stop to this career.

Like any major life obstacle such occurrences can really put halt to life but also allow you to then ask the bigger questions. “What’s next?” “What’s to become of me now?” “What’s my purpose?” and “How do I discover it?”

With determination and inner ambition, Lewis didn’t allow this hindrance in life set him back but rather let the obstacle become the way. He sought out council and advice from coaches and went on to creating his podcast – The School of Greatness.

He is now considered one of the top podcasters, he has created a multi-million-dollar online business, and is requested by many to speak and coach. He has made significant change his life. He realised by interviewing many successful people that success doesn’t come by chance or freakish talent but rather by the habits we adopt.

Lewis has interviewed many great people all of which he gives credit to in this book. He shares some of their unique stories that allow him to portray the greater messages for all of us.

The book is written in 8 chapters plus the intro and conclusion. The chapters are what he summarises as the 8 habits we should all adopt to help us in living bigger, loving deeper and leaving a greater legacy.

Those chapters include: create a vision; turn adversity into advantage; create a champions mindset; develop hustle; master your body; practice positive habits; build a winning team; and live a life of service.

Each chapter shares stories and examples of why the habit is so great – using the very people he has interviewed. He then shares with us exercises to take action on at the end of each chapter.

For some of these exercises, if you are already a practiser of self-improvement, you may be familiar and others may be new. I found myself picking up new thoughts, new practices and even slightly different ways to approach current practices. No matter where you are on your journey there will be something to pick up from this book.

I must give credit to Lewis for his writing ability. To be able to summarise all the lessons and learnings taken from his own life experiences and that of his guests into a very easy to read, short book, takes great skill. And he has done it.

This book is a New York Times best seller and its easy to see why. Great read and so many great lessons to be had. If you want to become great, lead and live a strong legacy this book is well worth a read. Thanks Lewis. I look forward to what comes next.
